Rome: 3 nights at Sonnino Suites

Karen and Peter are starting their honeymoon in the neighbourhood of Trastavere on the West bank of the Tiber river in Rome. In Caesar’s time, Trastavere would have been considered “the boonies” but it flourished in the middle ages, developing a maze of charming narrow streets. Today, Trastavere is known for its bohemian spirit and reasonably-priced restaurants—a rarity in Rome!

Florence: 4 nights at Orto de Medici

Florence: the cradle of the Renaissance! This city is packed to the gills with churches, museums, gelato and leather shops. Located in a 19th century palazzo, Orto de Medici is closely situated to all the big sights but just outside the hustle and bustle. How romantic!

Castellina in Chianti: 5 nights at Colle Etrusco Salvolpi

After Florence, Karen and Peter will spend five days driving around the Chianti region, getting lost and drinking wine. Salvolpi is a short trek away from the town of Castellina in Chianti, which boasts the best gelato shop in Tuscany!

Chianti: 5-day Car Rental

Dinner for Two at Solociccia

Solociccia means “only meat” and they’re not kidding. Butcher extraordinaire Dario Cecchini serves a six-course dinner focusing on unusual cuts of grass-fed beef out of his restaurant in the tiny town of Panzano. This three-hour feast includes wine and after-dinner liqueurs.

Item Price Purchase
Dinner for Two at Solociccia $90.00
Dinner for Two at La Finestra in Siena

One of the most popular restaurants in Siena, La Finestra specializes in Tuscan specialties like wild boar, truffles and porcini mushrooms. This was one of Karen’s old haunts when she did a summer abroad program in Siena in 2004, so dinner will bring back great memories and crazy stories that Pete has probably heard before.

Dinner for Two at La Finestra $75.00
Tour, Wine Tasting and Lunch at Castello di Verrazano

During this three-hour visit to Castello di Verrazano, Peter and Karen will tour some vineyards and late-Renaissance gardens, taste some wine and olive oil, and see the wild boar that are bred nearby.

Bologna: 4 nights at Palazzo Trevi Charming House

While North Americans are all “OoooOOooo!” over Florence, Italians love Bologna. In fact, Bologna was recommended as a honeymoon destination by our friend Remo: a real-life, authentic Italian—he has an accent and everything. The big thing to do in Bologna is to hike 3.5 km uphill under a 17th-century arcade to the San Luca basilica. We’ll need a good place to sleep.

Item Price Purchase
1 night at Palazzo Trevi Charming House $200.00
Bologna Foodie Tour

According to Trip Advisor, the #1 best thing to do in Bologna is to take an Italian Days Food Experience Tour. Guide Alessandro picks you up at your hotel in the early AM and transports you to the countryside to see the production of Parmigiano-Reggiano cheese, prosciutto and balsamic vinegar. Somewhere in there is a “light” six-course lunch. Educational and delicious!
